13X molecular sieve, also known as sodium X-type sieve, is an alkali metal aluminosilicate with strong basicity. Its chemical formula is Na₂O·Al₂O₃·2.45SiO₂·6.0H₂O, with a pore size of 10 Å—ideal for adsorbing molecules between 3.64 Å and 10 Å.

Chemical Formula: Na₂O·Al₂O₃·2.45SiO₂·6.0H₂O (Sodium-type X zeolite)

Crystal Structure: Cubic crystal system with uniform micropores (~1.0 nm).

Cation Type: Na⁺ (sodium ions); can be exchanged with other cations like Ca²⁺or K⁺to adjust properties.

Adsorption Capacity                    High for H₂O, CO₂, H₂S, hydrocarbons

Thermal Stabilit                            Up to 600°C (recommended below 350°C for regular use)

Chemical Stability                        Stable under neutral and mild conditions

Shape                                             Spherical beads, pellets, or powder forms

4. Adsorption Characteristics of 13X Molecular Sieve

– Adsorbable Molecules:

Water (H2O), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Unsaturated Hydrocarbons (e.g., Ethylene, Propylene).

– Non-Adsorbable Molecules:

Molecules larger than 10 Å or those incompatible with its polar surface under certain conditions.

Key Point: Its large pore size makes it suitable for adsorbing both moisture and larger polar molecules like CO2 and H2S.

5.Major Applications of 13X Molecular Sieve

– Gas Purification:

Removes moisture, CO₂, H₂S from natural gas and cracked gas streams.

Air drying in air separation plants (protects cryogenic units).

– Petrochemical Industry:

Separates normal alkanes from isoalkanes/aromatics.

Used as a catalyst carrier for reactions such as isomerization and alkylation.

– Environmental Protection:

Captures VOCs and toxic gases in industrial exhaust.

Nuclear waste gas treatment (e.g., krypton, xenon).

– Other Uses:

Oxygen concentrators (with 5A sieve).

Household dehumidifiers, refrigerator and air-conditioner desiccants.

6. What Is the Difference Between 3A, 4A, 5A, and 13X Molecular Sieves?

Type             Pore Size            Cation                  Typical Use

3A                    3Å                     K⁺            Deep drying (water-only adsorption)

4A                    4Å                    Na⁺           Water, CO₂, small hydrocarbons drying

5A                    5Å                    Ca²⁺          n-Alkane separation, O₂/N₂ separation

13X                 10Å                   Na⁺           Large-molecule adsorption: CO₂, H₂S, VOCs, catalyst use

7. Regeneration Methods for 13X Molecular Sieve

– Thermal Regeneration:

Heat at 200–350°C under dry air or inert gas to desorb moisture and gases.

– Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA):

Pressure changes can help regenerate in gas drying units.

Lifespan: Multiple cycles possible if protected from contaminants like oils or acids.

8.What Precautions Should Be Taken When Using 13X Molecular Sieve?

– Sealed Storage: Keep sealed to prevent moisture uptake.

– Avoid Contamination: Keep away from acids, oils, and organic solvents to protect crystal structure.

9.What is the temperature limit of 13X molecular sieve?

It can withstand temperatures up to 600°C, but for long-term stability and performance, it’s recommended to stay below 350°C.

10. How does 13X molecular sieve differ from activated alumina or silica gel?

– 13X molecular sieve has a much higher adsorption capacity for polar molecules (like water, CO₂, H₂S) and works effectively at lower relative humidity or even under vacuum.

– Silica gel and activated alumina mainly adsorb water and are less effective at removing gases like CO₂ or hydrocarbons.

– 13X is also regenerable at lower temperatures compared to silica gel in some cases.

11. Can 13X molecular sieve be customized for specific gases?

Yes. While sodium (Na⁺) type is most common, it can be modified by ion exchange (e.g., Ca²⁺, K⁺) to adjust adsorption selectivity or optimize for specific separation processes.

12. How do I know if 13X molecular sieve needs regeneration or replacement?

Typical indicators:

Decreased adsorption performance.

Increased outlet moisture or CO₂ levels.

Longer drying cycles in adsorption systems.

Monitoring system performance (e.g., outlet gas dew point) helps detect when regeneration or replacement is needed.

13. Does particle size affect the performance of 13X molecular sieve?

Yes.

Smaller particles (1.6–2.5 mm): Faster adsorption speed but higher pressure drop.

Larger particles (3–5 mm): Lower pressure drop, longer cycle time, suited for larger systems.

Selection depends on your process flow rate and design.

14. Can 13X molecular sieve adsorb oxygen (O₂) or nitrogen (N₂)?

Generally, no. The kinetic diameters of O₂ and N₂ are too large relative to its selectivity and its main function is to adsorb polar molecules like H₂O and CO₂ in gas mixtures.
