Molecular Sieve Powder Activation Moisture Adsorbents in PU
Molecular sieve powder, commonly referred to as zeolite powder, is a thermally activated, synthetic aluminosilicate with exceptional moisture adsorption properties. As an inorganic cation exchanger, it plays a vital role across a wide range of industrial applications, including water treatment, catalysis, and nuclear waste management. Its unique structure and high affinity for moisture make it an essential additive in formulations where water sensitivity and product stability are critical.
With a foamless, free-flowing powder form, molecular sieve powder is widely used as a desiccant in moisture-sensitive systems such as epoxy paints, polyurethane resins, adhesives, and hardeners. It functions primarily as a moisture scavenger—absorbing residual water and air bubbles that may otherwise lead to defects like foaming, reduced shelf life, or compromised performance. This is especially important in one-component (1K) and two-component (2K) polyurethane systems, where moisture can trigger unwanted chemical reactions, including the formation of CO₂.
As an environmentally preferable alternative to traditional desiccants, zeolite Type A—particularly in its potassium-based 3A form—provides precise moisture control by adsorbing molecules with critical diameters below 3 angstroms. This makes it ideal for protecting moisture-sensitive materials and enhancing the durability and effectiveness of various polymer-based products.

Key Applications Include:
Efficient Moisture Removal: Adsorbs trace water in raw materials to prevent CO₂ formation and foaming.
Improved Adhesive and Coating Quality: Enhances bonding strength, surface appearance, and mechanical performance.
Extended Shelf Life: Reduces side reactions, increasing storage stability and pot life.
Catalytic Enhancement: Provides a mild catalytic effect, accelerating curing and increasing cross-linking density.
Bubble and Defect Reduction: Minimizes bubble formation and ensures product uniformity.
Environmentally Safe: Non-toxic, odorless, and reusable after regeneration.
Typical Applications:
Epoxy paints and resins
Polyurethane coatings, flooring, adhesives, and elastomers (1K & 2K)
Zinc-rich and metallic pigment systems
Silicone and polysulfide sealants
Azeotropic and ketal reactions
Sports floors, casting resins, waterproofing materials
Molecular sieve powder is also available as a paste (typically 50% dispersed in castor oil) for ease of use in solvent-free systems. Its ability to control moisture and volatile components makes it an indispensable additive for industries seeking high-performance, long-lasting, and environmentally responsible solutions.
