Application Case: Activated Alumina in Compressed Air Drying

Table of Contents

Background

Activated alumina for compressed air drying: achieves -50°C dew point, low energy use, and long service life in industrial applications.

An automotive spray workshop required dry, clean compressed air (dew point ≤ -40℃) for paint quality. The existing refrigerated dryer failed to remove moisture effectively, causing paint defects and equipment corrosion. The plant upgraded to an activated alumina adsorption dryer.

Solution: Activated Alumina Adsorption System

1.Setup

  • 75kW screw air compressor (12 m³/min, oil ≤3ppm)
  • 3-stage filtration (oil, dust, precision)
  • Twin-tower dryer filled with 3–5mm activated alumina
  • Heatless regeneration using 15% dry air
  • High water adsorption (≥20%), stable dew point ≤ -50℃
  • Resistant to oil mist (≤0.1ppm), 50% longer life than silica gel
  • Low wear rate (<0.5%), avoids clogging

3.Performance

Parameter                                            Value

Adsorption cycle                                8 minutes

Regeneration method                       Heatless

Operating pressure                           0.7 MPa

Outlet dew point                                ≤ -50℃

Results

  • Dew point improved from -20℃ to -55℃—no more water mist
  • 30% energy savings vs. heated dryers (~36,000 kWh/year)
  • 60% lower maintenance costs (alumina replaced every 3 years)

Applications

  • Food & pharma: meets ISO 8573-1 Class 2
  • Electronics: protects sensitive parts from oxidation
  • Pneumatic tools: extends service life

Note: Pre-oil removal (e.g., with activated carbon) is recommended to protect alumina.
